5899819 The 'first' obsession got old a long time ago.
Really loved the scene with Sunny.
3 wps is about 180 wpm, which would be pathetic for me. I know I'm not the fastest, but I could knock this story out in a full day, time for meals accounted, with no sleep.
Question wouldn't a magically charmed gem be used as a conduit for him to speak in a similar way to using Rarity's horn not work?
So, a fun weekend, then.
Well, that's gonna prove to be a big problem.
Also question can Max understand equestrian humans?

Nitpicks aside; can he understand Equestrian Human now?
good job keep it up
5899927 Pfft, I can read it in 17.
Should be "internally". Very big difference in meaning, there
“Now, my dear,” he said, a large grin spreading across his muzzle, “how about a nice, friendly game of chess?” shit
Epic nice chapter
I'm finding this turn of events very interesting and am looking forward to seeing how this turns out.
"or push through to the other side of the vein and you begin to bleed eternally?" - Should be "internally"
Prediction: Lack of magic is what's keeping him from understanding everypony.
"Max is neither of those" - only one thing was presented, so this sentence doesn't make sense.
I read the first 48ish chapters significantly faster than that. Now I'm going to have to see how long it would take to get here from the beginning. Stop throwing down the gauntlet.

What you did there, I see it.
It's about time someone slapped Celestia! Always stickin' her nose where it don't belong!

Sunny and Stacker, OTP!
Damn... I could definitely see how Luna would be sensitive to the whole Elements issue. Also, I hope Max's language issues are worked out soon. I'm glad that hoof language still works! That was my first thought but I was nervous that he had lost his comprehension of it.
So... Stacker is Rainbow cousin. I likey.
Also, is it safe to assume that an enchanted chess board, like the one used on discord?
Please at least have Max understand what the ponies are saying soon.
I can read over nineteen words per seconds so that 47 hours would be less then 7 for me if I were to make a guess at my time
well shit
stayclassy
The discord stuff is so dark compared to the general tone of the story.
So this all time, reason why ponies teach the humans like animal is because they don't understand our human speech, clever.
5899932 That is the question.
5899932 That was my question too!
:D
5899937 that's what I want to know.
Wow, people are slow readers.
Since max can only speak in equestrian humans and under stand what hes saying can he understand other human now to?
5900132 Derpy, not RD. See prior chapters with The Coming Dawn.
5900266 The same thing crossed my mind.
That would of course mean that humans are completely sentient and have just somehow lost their knowledge as a result of generations of breeding.
Its a living nightmare if that's true
Noo! Monochrome pony! It's a trap!
Hmm, so it affected Max's writing too. Bet he can't read Equestrian any more either. So I guess the chaos magic was affecting more than just his hearing, like I thought it might have.
Interesting that he hears griffons and equines speaking different languages, though they can understand each other just fine. Would be cool if that was the key. Some fundamental aspect of the world or of Equestrian life/magic that the ponies always assumed Max just had like they did.
5900266
I'm certain the story HAS to address this, especially since it's pointed out Max sounds like an Equestrian human to ponies now. But are the humans intelligent? We've seen SIGNS of intelligence, but are they isolated or do many humans there show them, just nopony noticed, like how it took our ponies a while to realize Max was still intelligent? Are they actually speaking a language or will Max just hear unintelligent noises?
5900151
The interludes appear to take place after the main story, and Max can speak and understand ponies just fine.

Sad thing is that the disappearance of our soon-to-be-stone mare can't be linked to the Archmage.
Ha! Humans DO have magic!
Keep going! ;)

I'm waiting for the shoe to drop that Max should never have been able to speak equestrian, (different vocal chords and all) and that his understanding was due to the malevolent chaos magic in the first place; purge the magic, purge the translation, essentially.
That's what seems obvious to me, anyway.
I hate needles. I mean, what if they break off inside of you, or push through to the other side of the vein and you begin to bleed internally?
That happened to me some newbie nurse was nervous and pushed it to far in, nothing big happened just hurt a bit and got a blue spot.
*sigh* I was plenty afraid of needles before this... *Rubs arms*
wait......this means that now he can comprehend what equestrian humans say

Magic shouldn't interfere with hoof language, as it was taught to him, and the movements/clapping sounds would remain exactly the same.
Wild mass guessing time! Max can now understand Equestrian humans!
I don't know why, but ever since the introduction of Ivory I can't help but picture a ponified Satsuki Kiryuin.

Eyebrows and all
Is Max supposed to be mildly autistic, or is it just a lot of ptsd? Because a lot of the stimming like quirks he has and the repeated 'cheek chewing' you always have him doing leads me to believe you might intend him to come off as such...
Everyone is being far too emotional and too hard on Celestia. They all agreed to try it out. Then turn on Celestia without much thought, if anything they should apologise to her too;
The elements did succeed, they got rid of his chaos magic which caused Twilight to practically rape him. And would have ended up with him having to be isolated if it wasn't fixed. He's lost half of one form of communication that he had. In that now he cant understand them verbally. He can still use sign language to communicate. Still is a super smart human, can at least lean to write again, can TALK. And has no lasting negative effects. Seems a good trade to me.
The "Chaos" Magic left in him is really only "chaos" in name alone and is used as a cheap sucker punch to Celestia to say it didn't work. When it did , what's left in him is his natural magic, is tiny , does no harm , and apparently is different and isn't really anything like the chaos magic they where trying to get rid of anyway.
Also Luna;
- So is Luna calling herself inherently evil then? She thinks it would have never worked because Max isn't evil? - BUT IT DID WORK ; they just all seem to overlook that the chaos magic was translating for him and now they might have to put in a bit of effort again.
And somewhere in the multiverse, a pair of glowing eyes of deepest crimson rose from behind the utter darkness of a DM's screen of Hit Tables and Random Encounters. A low demonic chuckling grew along with the most ominous sound ever heard in all the worlds...
...a palmfull of dice being rolled casually, moments before being cast.
interesting and exciting development.
while many people are speculating that Max may now be able to understand equestrian humans, it is still very possible he cannot. for starters, there are still significant biological differences between Max and the equestrian humans which leads me to believe equestrian humans may not even natively speak English as our world already has more languages to count. I think the bigger language issue is how the equestrian humans are raised. They only live 15 years or so causing them to have little time to learn a language in the first place.
with this said, it sounds like Max makes the same chirps as the equestrian humans so it is possible he can understand them. that would open up many possibilities as the ponies will learn through Max that they were smart all along....
i hope that Twilight and Celestia look into two additional possibilities for communications. The first is the spell used on Max and Rarity a few times to allow Max to use Rarities voice to speak. Would this spell still work? the other is the transformation potion. now that he does not have the same quantity of chaos magic within him there should be little chance he will transform into something other than a pony.
finally i also hope we learn more about the invisible pony that seems to have been helping Max in some way. perhaps now he will either be able to see and or hear that pony.
Well...It like..naruto's seal.
If we remove the seal, Naruto will dead um...
And. Max just lost Chaos magic. just like became a stone inside the magic box.
Why not using Potion?

If it's physical differences that prevent communication, then ponies and gryphons would never understand each other yet, they do, as observed by Max in his de-chaosed state. No, there's some basic magic within the major "original" races of Equestria that allows them to understand each other that humans, Equestrian and Earth varieties, are not privy to. It's also not perfect translation as we know dialects such as Prench confound the "magic" so a non-Prench speaker wouldn't understand it fully, but they can learn it with time and effort-- or a quick Understanding enchantment.
I am very interested in what tiny magic was found in Max however. Is it unique to him? If it's similar to Equestrian human magic, how so? Maybe it's this tiny spark that allows communication between those sharing it? Just as all natural Equestrians have their own type of magic which allows general communication-- HA! I broke the code! So that's how ponies and gryphons can talk to each other. Max could only understand Twilight because Discord's magic was of the same "type" as Equestria's (in a meta fashion), and once purged, so to was the universal translator.
Assuming Twilight puzzles it out like I have, will she try to do to Max what Max was doing to her not long ago? That is, keeping him close so the Equestrian magic in her will slowly seep into him, infusing Max with, er, "harmonious pony magic" instead of the chaos magic which is no longer there leaving Max in a potentially vulnerable state to whatever powerful magic comes along.
The fact that she gets to snuggle and cuddle and fawn over Max incessantly for hours has nothing to do with it!
Well... maybe a little...
Ok, a lot! But you can't blame a girl for wanting some hands-on-time with her special somepony.
Could go two ways here. Twilight keeps up a constant low-powered spell and hopes it works before Max dies of old age, or she dumps a potentially dangerous amount of magic into Max to force some of that Equestrian magic to stick in him like Discord's did. Seeing as how Discord is a god and doing dangerous things "for the lol's" with cosmic powers, I'm leaning towards magic-dump.
5900705
Exactly. I've had it up to here with Twilight's Celestia-hating bullshit.
And hey, look, the Arch-Mage managing to step in just in time to catch another pony who might rat him out. How convenient.

I've had a needle break off embedded in the bone.
I was (and am) a very skinny kid.
When I was 7 I went in for a vaccination, and the local hospital is a complete joke.
Even the nearby cities' hospitals say the same, and even in the same harshness. One nurse from a hospital one town over said "________ Hospital? They have the quality of practice of a Civil War Era field tent! But with worse record keeping."
Anyway, it's of no surprise that when I went in with my brother, it ended badly.
(Well, for me at least, there weren't any issues with my brother.)
So we head in, my dad fills out all the paperwork, we go into a room, the nurse comes in with a tray holding everything she'll need.
Later I find out that my dad had explained to the nurse while we were in the room before he came in that my brother hates needles, and so he told her to wait til he's distracted to inject him.
So my dad addresses him, he turns, the nurse gives him the shot and then he notices as she's removing the needle, and he gets a little teary eyed from the sting but doesn't freak out like he would have if he saw it coming.
Then (in front of us this time) he tells the nurse: "With *my name* just tell him you're giving him a shot and where, and then do it."
I always have been -and remain- apathetic to getting a shot.
But instead of giving me the shot in her hand, she starts talking to my dad about something or other (I didn't understand whatever big words she was saying, and forget what they were. That part isn't all that clear in my memory, and remains fuzzy, no doubt due toi the impact of what followed) and I turn to look at my dad out of confusion.
She stopped mid sentence almost immediately after she noticed I wasn't paying attention, wheeled slightly to face me, stabbed my arm like someone holding a pen hammering sideways on my arm (though the vaccination was supposed to go in a vein instead of a muscle group) and depressed the plunger.
The whole thing took about 1/5th of a second or less.
Now, being the downright scrawny guy I was at the time, my arm was no more than 2.5 inches in diameter.
The needle was about that long (maybe 2 inches even).
It barely went over an inch into my arm before it slammed into the bone, and broke about 1/5th of an inch (half a centimeter) off the tip that stuck in the humerus of my right arm (the humerus is the big bone that connects the shoulder socket to the elbow).
My dad flips out, I start screaming (I'd still scream, it hurt more than when I broke my pinkie toe!), my brother stares at it for all of about half a second before he starts wailing at the sight alone, and the nurse is baffled for whatever reason.
My dad starts yelling at her as she sets the rest of the needle back on the tray.
I reach out with my left arm (luckily I am a lefty ) and narrowly miss grabbing the rest of the needle off the tray to shank little miss sadism (she'd pulled the wheel footed cart/table it was on out of my reach when she saw me lunge for it) before my dad yells at her to go get a doctor, or at least someone with actual medical training (knowing full well that nurses do get medical training, which she apparently slept through or was too high to understand).
She leaves, a doctor comes back with her, he takes one look and turns back to her (with a look that says if she didn't leave now he'd strangle her) telling her to go fetch a scalpel, a clamp (I think? It had a specific name with numbers in it and was some long but very thin locking tweezer-y looking thing, so I assume it was just a very thin precision clamp), a local anesthetic plus an injection of some painkiller (he saaid the actual drug names, but I don't remember them), and some cotton swabs.
She goes off and returns about a minute later with the supplies, he swabs my arm, gives me the injection, and leaves the room with everyone but myself.
My dad comes back in, my brother was sent to the waiting room with a different nurse, and the doc follows my dad back in.
The doctor cuts about 1.5cm wide incision all the way down to the bone til he touches the needle, sticks in the clamp, grasps the needle with it, and removes it.
So yeah, I also still have a scar from it (the scar is only about 0.4cm wide, thanks to where the clamps pressed and misshaped the wall of the incision at the base).
I don't even know if she got fired, but I remember her face.
If I do ever see her again (and it's a small town of less than 10,000 people, so if she hasn't left, I might very well run into her), I'm going to kick her as hard as I can in the crotch and flee.
There's nothing like some bitch shanking you to the bone and requiring you get surgery at the age of 7 to burn their every last little facial feature into your memory for life.
That said, you have to hit someone HARD to actually stab them through to the bone (even if they're a scrawny child, let alone an adult).
So they cannot understand normal human language. Okay. And they got rid of the odd chaos magic that wasn't normal. If this is the explanation for why all the humans in Equestria act the way they do, that might make some sense: they were all normal humans but being forced into a new world saddled then with a forced disability via chaos magic that affected how they came across in their physical appearance. So they look the way they do because of this chaos magic thing. That would make sense. Especially since it takes TENS OF THOUSANDS of years for people to evolve or adapt to changes in their environment, and since they've only been around for one thousand and are not even a natural species, the idea they just devolved that much with nothing "assisting" them is ludicrous.
ok I know this story is good but the last chapter puts a hole new light on things. this is getting good in a hole new level.

Noone's asking the obvious question:
How did he understand them before, in the first place? He's from another world, with another entire language!
Answer: someone cast a spell on him that let him read, write, and hear Equestrian. Someone presumably CHAOTIC.
Side effect was that he was rendered mute, probably because he was trying to speak Equestrian and English at the same time....
And he can't understand them now because the elements of Harmony ***broke the spell on him.***
